Though I have been blogging for years now, I am far from knowledgeable about what I’m doing. I like to take pictures, I like to log stories of the crazy things we get to do, and sometimes I like to write about random things, but I don’t know how to do much behind the scenes with the technical side of blogging. So when I let my old domain lapse, and subsequently all my photos that were uploaded under that domain disappeared, I freaked out a little.
I asked my hosting company questions about what to do, and though I have had zero complaints with Bluehost so far, I have to say even asking about how to fix my photos, it was like we were speaking two different languages to each other. They almost made me repay (plus penalty fees) for my old domain! With no promise my pictures would show up again! Tsk tsk. No need for that nonsense.
Google, God bless you.
Through the power of my simple search abilities, I found out about search and replace plugins for WordPress.org blogs. Exactly what I was looking for; the plugin basically changes the url (? i’m an idiot) or name of the photos under your old domain, to your new one and then the photos should transfer over and become viewable again. I downloaded what I hoped would be the best/easiest plugin (Search Regex) and fiddled with it a bit before stepping away from my computer out of fear I’d mess more up because I seriously don’t know what I’m doing.
At one point I wanted to work behind the scenes on blogs, creating them and whatnot, but I ultimately went to school to become a MASTER at blog posts. This is all I truly know.
So I doubted that I was fully understanding what to do, and refused to try again until I had adequate time and brain power to figure hard things out if I needed to.
Turns out I didn’t need to wait, the plugin is ridiculously easy, and literally solved all my problems when I just took a chance (basically said, “f*** it”) and searched and replaced linkopingwithlove to westcoastabroad.
Pictures resurrected! Hallelujah!
Seriously, that was so easy, I actually almost feel even more stupid now. Almost. The happiness of my photos showing up again eases that feeling ever so slightly.
